Girl In A Coma w/Miss Derringer, Joybook & Truckers Wife
Lost On Main 319 Main Street Chico, CA Promoter : Devil Kat Rock Special Notes : =GIRL IN A COMA= Girl in a Coma hailing from the Lone Star State formed when best friends Jenn Alva and Phanie Diaz met in Jr-high school art class over a mutual love of the Smiths Nirvana and skipping school. All they needed was a singer. Enter Nina Diaz Phanies then 12-year old little sister. Nina blew them away with her mesmerizing vocals a powerful voice some critics have compared to Bjork Patsy Cline and the bands hero Morrissey himself. The trio practiced for three years gigged at local punk rock clubs played a High School talent show one kids birthday party and then hit the road building up a solid and loyal fan base across the country. In 2006 the Girls played for Joan Jett and long-time songwriting partner and producer Kenny Laguna at New Yorks Knitting Factory as part of a cable TV show featuring unknown bands. Jett and Laguna were so impressed with the band that they signed GIAC to their label Blackheart Records on the spot. The bands 2007 debut album Both Before Im Gone was a critical hit with raves from Alternative Press Magazine the LA Weekly Bust magazine among many others with the album reaching No. 23 on Billboards Heatseekers chart and No. 21 on iTunes. Clumsy Sky the bands first single won a 2007 Independent Music Award in the Best Song-Punk category. The last of the four singles released Their Cell was recently voted by TV viewers into the Top 10 on Logos The Click List show. Since the CDs release GIAC has been headlining shows in venues coast-to-coast playing on Cyndi Laupers True Colors tour as well as opening for the Pogues Social Distortion Tegan and Sara in a cross-country national tour and with Morrissey in both Europe and the U.S. In between the constant touring the band was busy writing songs for their new CD the upcoming Blackheart Records release Trio B.C. The creative process was a new and liberating experience for the Girls. The challenge for this record was having to come up with songs in a matter of a year Jenn explains with Both Before Im Gone we had 7 years with that material. For this new CD a little over 18 months. As with their first album the end result is a unique amalgamation of eclectic influences: oldies rockabilly 90s alternative and contemporary bands both indie and mainstream. And in a nod to their San Antonio Texas background the Girls place their cutting-edge rock sound in a familiar context. We chose Trio B.C. as the album title because it was the name of our grandfathers Tejano band way back in the 50s Phanie Diaz explains. He was our first musical influence. He would play us guitar and sing and we would love to watch him in the garage with a cold beer in his hand playing his records and singing along like he meant it. His passion is our inspiration. We hope to make people feel that way about our music. Trio B.C. includes tracks produced by Grammy-award winning producer Greg Collins (U2 and Gwen Stefani) and Gabriel Gonzalez (formerly of At The Drive End and one of the producers of the bands debut Both Before Im Gone). Joan Jett and Kenny Laguna produced two special tracks on the CD Vino and Joannie in the City a snarling post-punk rock cut featuring Joan Jett on guitar along with Jetts distinct vocals on background. The song is about females in the music business Girl in a Comas writer/singer Nina Diaz explains about her song having that tough attitude and doing what you want. Joan was the door opener for us all. The rest of the albums cuts explore different styles and tempos with tracks ranging from the eerie and poetic love song El Monte to the fast and hard rocking Static Mind. Other tracks include the delicate ballad Pink Lemonade and the more sonically experimental Ven Cerca Girl in a Comas first Spanish language song a cover of a bright 1960s Mexican pop song but made modern and dissonant with feedback and fuzzy guitars reminiscent of Sonic Youth at their grungiest best. When not on the road Phanie likes to Ghost Hunt. Jenn paints pictures. And Nina has a stuffed bear named G?enther. They all love tattoos. The band also finds inspiration in the music and attitude of early punk bands like the Misfits and Black Flag. The bands lyrics deal with honkytonk subjects like prison alcohol sobriety God death murder and alcohol. Miss Derringer has released two albums with Sympathy for the Record Industry. The first King James Crown Royal and a Colt 45 was released in 2004. Genre: Gothic/Country/Punk Web: www.myspace.com/missderringer |

Surrogate (CD Release Party) w/The Shimmies and Zach Zeller (solo acoustic)
Duffys 337 Main Street Chico, CA Promoter : Devil Kat Rock Special Notes : =SURROGRATE= With Popular Mechanics the second full-length from Chico CA-based rock outfit Surrogate the band has successfully honed their subtle blend of indie pop songcraft and lyrical witticism down to a science (pun intended). In the two years since the release of their critically acclaimed 2007 debut Love is For the Rich?????which NPR described as deliciously low-key and which elsewhere garnered comparisons to everyone from The Shins and Death Cab to shoegaze icons Starflyer 59 and Pedro the Lion??the band has toured the country with labelmates Emery and Ruth played shows from Fargo to Florida and diligently labored on perfecting the 11 songs that would eventually comprise Popular Mechanics. Though Popular Mechanics was once again recorded by Surrogate frontman and multi-instrumentalist Chris Keene himself the process and results of the recorded process were markedly different this time around. Whereas Love is For the Rich was recorded on an aging laptop in Keenes bedroom Popular Mechanics found Keene now a producer and engineer by trade tracking in his new digs in Chicos Heirloom Studios. First and foremost with Popular Mechanics the finished product is much more what we had in mind not just whatever happens happens says Keene about the recording process on the new record. Heirloom is a room that I had become intimately familiar with as far as the acoustics go since I work there and with the resources at my disposal this time around as far as mics and recording gear it just lent itself to a better recording. And Popular Mechanics bears out this notion of sonic fidelity. From the violins and syncopated drums of album opener Surprise to the sequenced beats and guitar-rock chorus of Exercise Machines to the elegant acoustic strains of album closer The Devil Gets What He Wants (Sometimes) Popular Mechanics which was mixed by Keene as well is a sonic masterpiece. Popular Mechanics also serves to showcase the bands newly refined song writing style with Keene and drummer Jordan Mallory?joined by touring members Daniel Martin on keyboards and Daniel Taylor on bass?having had ample time to refine rework and retool this batch of songs into a cohesive batch. The first record was something of a hodge podge of writing style and flavors says Keene. For this record theres still a lot of variety but our objective was to write a more cohesive and flowing record a little more streamlined with less tangents and bunny trails. Lyrically and musically Popular Mechanics plays out less like a collection of assembled songs and more like an album with overarching themes forming a through-line from start to finish. One of the foremost of these themes the idea of moderation personally politically and socially appears multiple times on Popular Mechanics most readily on the albums title track. Popular Mechanics is a song about politics sort of a tongue-in-cheek reference to both sides of the aisle. Political extremism or far left far right tends to strike me as kind of silly so I was making an effort to try to make fun of it. And with this kind of sardonic somewhat darkly humorous take on a serious topic being the norm for Surrogate Popular Mechanics stood out to Keene as being the prime candidate to represent the album as a whole. Lyrically Popular Mechanics seemed like a good flagship song to represent the themes of the whole record in that all the songs are very tongue-in-cheek and the record itself deals a lot with moderation. With Popular Mechanics Surrogate has not only avoided the dreaded sophomore curse but has instead succeeded in once again fulfilling their personal credo Intelligent pop songs for people of moderate to great intelligence. Slow Car Crashs Omarr Escoffie (Solo/AC) w/
Duffys 337 Main Street Chico, CA Promoter : Devil Kat Rock Special Notes : =SLOW CAR CRASH= Born in Chicago and raised by a single mom, singer songwriter Omarr Escoffie has lived of life of hard times and has taken those experiences to create some of the most real and heartfelt songs written in recent times. At age 15, Escoffie left home only to live in the back of a station wagon, with the self assurance that his dream of stardom would one day be realized. At 18, Omarr went to Covenant House, a halfway home for abused and homeless kids, by choice, so that he could live in Los Angeles, where he felt he could showcase his talents. Through the subsequent years, Escoffie honed his songwriting craft and released his 1st CD Ambivalence in 1999 as Slow Car Crash. This sparked a creative flame which led him to release Come Out and Play Tonight in 2001 and the EP Hope on the Other Side in 2003. This EP marked a musical evolution in his sound featuring a full live band, acoustic guitars, soul, jazz and rock, and a lyrical growth marked by social awareness and a new found hope in life. In 2003, Omarr played bass guitar for Adam Kowalczyk of LIVE which released Looking up from the Ground. The pair toured and played together for a year. Check out Adam and the Weight to listen to some of the tracks. In 2006, Omarr released The Trip We Planned. These songs realized a lifelong journey and the content, both musically and lyrically, comes from a genuine performer. In 2007, Slow Car Crash did 82 shows by playing 2 national tours, 3 West Coast tours as well as shows at home in Los Angeles, independently and without any label support. Alexander Berberichs indie film BONNE ANN?E was released in April 2008 and featured SCCs Swan Song and The Message. BONNE ANN?E was included in the prestigious Raindance Film Festival in London. 2008 also brought a solo acoustic tour for Escoffie in Europe from July to September. Shows were played throughout England, France, Spain and Ireland. In 2009 Slow Car Crash released Intermission, a 7 song collection of full band and solo acoustic songs. This year will be spent performing and bringing SCCs music to new places and fans. Genre: Rock/Soul/Jazz Web: myspace.com/slowcarcrash |

A dog is barking, bursts of hearty laughter fill the air after a 100 year long day of hard work. The workday is faced head on, and usually involves more turmoil than any mere mortal would take on in a lifetime. They get through it unscathed just in time to take that final bow from the 10,000th performance, whether its for 4 or 4000 fans. YOUR APPLAUSE IS THE SUSTENANCE THEY THRIVE ON Its a lifestyle understood by a select few. A hundreds-of-years old tradition, a heritage carried on by modern day minstrels and mountebanks that understand an artistic outlook that is the ground zero of REAL show business and everything it represents. They put everything on the line, willing to die for their art if necessary. HELLZAPOPPIN A SideShow Revue is truly a KIDDIESHOW FOR ADULTS. A great man once said You dont stop going to the circus when you get old, YOU GET OLD WHEN YOU STOP GOING TO THE CIRCUS. He was right, and this show is a hellacious fountain of youth. In this jaded and turbulent world, the aim of HELLZAPOPPIN is to provide entertainment to an audience that thinks theyve seen EVERYTHING! Its our job to prove them wrong! We take great pride in watching a jaw drop or a grown man faint. We call these FALLING OVATIONS. We take the viewer on a roller coaster ride back to childhood sensibilities.
